LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Food Bank of Lincoln is preparing for their Backpack Walk on Saturday, as well as their annual hunger rally.

The Food Bank of Lincoln serves 16 counties in southeastern Nebraska and according to this organization, 56,780 people in that area are considered “food insecure."

That term describes the amount of people who don’t know when or how they will get their next meal. Of that number, 19,810 are children.

Through agency partnerships, SNAP and community education, the Food Bank of Lincoln distributes food to people who are looking to make ends meet and it is this mission that fuels their work across the state.

In 2014, the Food Bank was able to connect people to 6,723,299 meals.

On Monday, April 6th, the Food Bank of Lincoln partnered with "Volunteer Partners" to have 200 volunteers pack 40,000 meals in the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Those meals will then be distributed in Southeast Nebraska.

It's the second year the organization has held this hunger rally, an event that helps them get more meals to more people. However, the need is constantly growing.

"A lot of children rely on their school's breakfast or lunch and they're left on the weekend wondering if they'll have food. We have a lot of students waiting on the list and a lot of schools that need more backpacks...the list is growing faster," said Alynn Sampson, the Child Hunger Programs Director at the Food Bank of Lincoln.

"We purchase all of these food and we can stretch individuals' dollars a lot further by purchasing from a whole sale company," said Sampson.

But to purchase that food, the Food Bank of Lincoln needs donations.

One of their biggest fundraisers is their annual "BackPack Extra Mile" event which will be held Saturday, April 11 at 10 a.m. at Lincoln East High School.

This event is sponsored by the Food Bank of Lincoln and Lincoln Public Schools. The BackPack program provides 648,495 meals each year to families.

In addition to bringing incredible awareness to child hunger, the event is a major Food Bank fundraiser.
