Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry has won re-election in Nebraska's 1st congressional district.

The incumbent Fortenberry defeated Democrat Korey Reiman on Tuesday for a fifth term in office.

Fortenberry was a heavy favorite, having won the 2010 general election with 71 percent of the vote.

The Republican emphasized the need to reduce federal spending and replace the federal health care law. He opposes abortion rights.

Reiman is an attorney from Lincoln. He campaigned on protecting Medicare, stopping efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and helping the nation's veterans. He also supported the federal health care law.

The district encompasses much of the eastern quarter of Nebraska, including Lincoln, Fremont, Norfolk, Beatrice and South Sioux City.
