Being placed in foster care can be traumatic for many kids, but one local organization is working to make it less frightening.

The Foster Care Closet is Lincoln is expanding to include an Intake Care Center.

It's a safe, kid friendly place where children can be brought between being pulled from their home and placed in a new one.

Organizers say kids are often made to wait in an office or the police station.

At the center, they'll have movies, games, food and new clothes, plus a homey environment which can help them feel more comfortable with what's happening.

Executive Director Leigh Esau says, "It's really important that the presentation of this intake care center models how we feel about our kids and that's why it's important that it's done right and it's done like that home feeling."

The center opens October first.

Esau says they expect to serve around 40 kids each month.

The expansion is thanks to a partnership between the Foster Care Closet and DHHS.

The center is renovating and needs volunteers and donations to be ready by their opening date.

They're asking for a fridge, a microwave stand, and tables and chairs.
