Four people were hurt when a folded up basketball hoop fell from the ceiling during a youth wrestling tournament at Weeping Water High School Sunday afternoon.
"It pivoted down, the cable or a bolt broke and it came down and struck four people," said Weeping Water Fire Chief Ernie West. The crowd was watching the Kyle Sorensen Memorial Wrestling Tournament when it happened around 1:30 p.m.
The tournament was supposed to last until around 7 p.m., but all that came to an abrupt end when the hoop fell into the crowd, injuring two adults and two children. The adults were taken from the scene by medical helicopter, the kids were transported to the hospital by ambulance. No word yet on their names or conditions.
When Weeping Water Fire and Rescue arrived at the school, the scene was chaotic. “A lot of people running around not knowing what to do and of course I didn't have enough firefighters there to assist so other people in the stands helped us out," said West.
Investigators will inspect the basketball hoop to determine why it swung into the crowd.
