Just a few days after Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek's controversial announcement that he'll keep Mary Lou Brown as city administrator, Brown is not at city hall.
Public Information Officer Wendy Meyer-Jerke said Brown will be out at least a week because of an unexpected surgery over the weekend.
It is not clear when she will return.
Vavricek has been criticized for asking for Brown's resignation and saying she would stay on as a consultant, but then saying Brown would act as city administrator until her September 30 resignation. He announced Friday that he'd like Brown to stay on permanently in the position.
