A 34-year-old Grand Island man is dead after a train smashed into his car.
The crash happened at 11:14 Friday night near the Union Pacific Interchange and Engleman Road. Grand Island Police Sergeant Kevin Sheeks said the man was the only person in the vehicle and was dead when they arrived.
"As with any incident, this is very horrific. I know it's very traumatic for the train crew. We ask the public to heed the warnings that are there at a crossing, whether they're lights or gates or just standard cross that says railroad crossing," said Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis, who noted that the freight train was traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles.
Traffic was rerouted for some time but all roads are now open.
