Golf Clinic Thanks Military Children for their Sacrifices

Updated: Mon 7:13 AM, Apr 09, 2012

Nearly 70 kids from military families took to the greens at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course. But they weren't just there to work on their swing.

"April is the month of the military child. A few years ago we got involved with Family Services and really wanted to give back and do something with the kids to say thanks for their service as well," said Chris Thomson, PGA Head Golf Professional at Wilderness Ridge.

The parents fight for freedom but it's the children who miss out on having their mom or dad at holidays and birthday parties.

"We want to recognize military kids because they serve too. It's an opportunity to try and bring recognition to military kids and how they've sacrificed and what they've done," said Dave Hall, State Youth Coordinator for the Family Program Office.

The clinic also taught kids the basics of the sport so they can one day play golf with their parents.

"This was one way, being in the golf business, that we thought that we could maybe inspire some kids to learn and play golf. It's something they can do for their lifetime," said Thomson.

Third grader Garrett Dickey said he can't wait to beat his dad and work on getting that long-distance hole in one.

"Chipping. Like when you kind of hit the ball in the air and then it can go a farther distance," said Dickey.
