Gov. Heineman Makes Appointments to State Board of Education

Gov. Dave Heineman announced two appointments to the State Board of Education. Glen Flint of Springfield was appointed representing District 2 of the State Board of Education and John Witzel of Papillion was appointed representing District 4 of the State Board of Education.

Flint, 57, is a computer programmer at Northrup Grumman, a position he has held since 1984. He volunteers as a storm spotter with Heartland REACT and received the recruit volunteer of the year award. Flint has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He and his wife Sonya have two children.

This position is due to the resignation of Mark Quandahl. District 2 includes portions of Douglas and Sarpy counties.

Witzel, 62, currently serves as a Board Member of Educational Service Unit #3 and is a member of the National School Board Association and Nebraska Association of School Boards. He is retired from the U.S. Air Force and is an author and publisher. Witzel has bachelor’s degrees in accounting and computer information systems from Bellevue University and a master’s degree in executive development from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He has served as a board member at the YMCA for the last eight years. He is a member of the Offutt Air Force Advisory Council and other various veteran organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

This position is due to the resignation of Rebecca Valdez. District 4 includes portions of Douglas and Sarpy counties.

Both will be sworn in by Secretary of State John Gale in a ceremony on March 28, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in the Governor’s Hearing Room of the State Capitol.
