Grand Island's Mr. Habitat Pageant

A local non-profit is putting its own spin on fundraising and competition.

Its the Mr. Habitat Pageant along with Habitat for Humanity's 11th Annual Salad and Silver Fundraiser. Five local pastors strutted their stuff on stage Tuesday to raise money for their cause.

The non-profit organization uses the funds to build homes for those in need. Supporters say events like this are vital to the organization.

Charles Peek was one of the contestants. "So much happens when there's fellowship and people come together with a common purpose. This brings people together for a really fun evening and the heart opens up and you begin to support things," said Peek. "This event is huge in their budget. This is the biggest, single fundraiser. The whole operation depends on the success of something like this."

Regardless of the skills they show on stage, the overall crown is awarded to the pastor who raises the most money. Last year, the entire event raised over 16-thousand dollars. With nearly 300 people in attendance, coordinators hope to raise even more this year.
