Grand Island, NE The annual Mr. Habitat pageant is just 2 weeks away, and the candidates are raising money for Habitat for Humanity in hopes of winning the title.
Grand Island Senior High principal, and Mr. Habitat hopeful, Jeff Gilbertson was joined by the Pearson family at Super Saver selling food to raise money.
Customers chowed down on hot dogs, and some chipped in extra to support Gilbertson.
The principal said he was inspired to compete this year by one of his very own students.
"I got Mr. Gilbertson into the race because he was my principal and I really cared about him. I've known him ever since I was five years old and he's just a really nice guy," said Robin Pearson, who Gilbertson called his unofficial Campaign Manager.
All of the donations and 75% of hotdog sales went to Habitat for Humanity.
Gilbertson said he hopes each candidate can raise at least $2,000 for the nonprofit.
