Harvest Season Brings Danger to Roadways
As we saw with the deadly crash in Blue Hill, harvest time can be dangerous for drivers on rural highways.
The state patrol says this time of year, they see more accidents between farming equipment and vehicles.
Nebraska Department of Roads says every year there are between two and four deadly crashes between vehicles and farming equipment on area roads, with between 60 and 70 injury crashes.
The tractors and combines move slowly and block visibility of on-coming traffic.
It can be difficult to see around them to pass safely and they kick up a lot of dust.
Troopers say slowing down and taking your time is key.
Another danger - farming equipment can startle deer onto the road.
Troopers say it's sometimes better to just hit a deer than try to avoid it because that's when drivers can roll their cars and do even more damage.
They say if you see harvesting going on, slow down and be prepared for deer to run into the road.
