In a week when temperatures hovered around 100 degrees, Holmes Lake hosted Lincoln's annual Triathlon for the Cornhusker State Games. 350 people took on the challenging course.
One of those people was Shawn Hostetler, who started running in the event four years ago after a family scare.
"Dad had a heart attack, was farming and I thought it was time to get off my butt, get out of the tractor and start doing stuff, so just been doing it ever since," says Hostetler.
Some became triathletes while trying to overcome injuries.
"I was always a runner, and I had an injury. Figured I needed to be off my knees a little bit. So I brought in the cycling and swimming, and I really, really like the three endurance activities," says Rena Valentino, running in her first Cornhusker State Games triathlon.
The course starts with a 750 meter swim through Holmes Lake, followed by 12 miles of bike riding through the streets of Lincoln. The final leg of the race is a 5 kilometer run around Holmes Lake, just as the sun starts to get hot. But the hot weather didn't affect all the triathletes.
"It helps that it's in the morning you know, usually you can get some cloud cover and stuff, but actually today's pretty nice. I would still go out and golf after this," says Shaun Satterfield after finishing the race.
Different athletes had different hurdles to overcome.
"For me it's the swim. I couldn't see very well coming back, the sun was kinda in my eyes," says Stephanie Randall, the first woman to cross the finish line.
In the end, Scott Bredehoft won the race his dad helped set up.
"This is his third win at the Cornhusker State Games Triathlon and it's always a sense of pride to see your own son do well and win," says Gary Bredehoft, the race director.
