Homeless Man Beaten While Sleeping

A 29-year-old homeless man is in the hospital after he was brutally assaulted while he was sleeping.

Lincoln police arrested 45-year-old Shekinah Lightspirit for 1st degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

The incident happened just before 6:30 Thursday morning near the People's City Mission in Lincoln.

Police said the victim was sleeping when Lightspirit threw a softball-sized steel ball at him. Officers said Lightspirit then jumped the victim and punched him several times. LPD also said Lightspirit was swinging a machete, but did not hit the victim.

Police arrested Lightspirit at the Matt Talbot Kitchen near 27th and Fair streets just after 9 a.m..
