For the City of Kearney, the unanimous vote from the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee ends the debate about where the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home will be located.

Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse appreciates the committee support in unanimously deciding to delete portions of LB 935, preventing reconsideration of Governor Heineman's decision to build the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney.

Clouse added, "This is an important step forward for a new veterans home that provides the dignity, respect and quality of life our Nebraska veterans deserve."

The vote to advance a pared back version of the bill to the full Nebraska Legislature came after bill sponsor, Senator Mike Gloor, offered the committee a written agreement. It pledges that the Senator would not support amendments to his priority bill that allow the veterans' home location to be reconsidered. Gloor pledged to withdraw the bill if any Senator forces the issue.

Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse said he felt confident that Gloor's agreement would limit the scope of the legislative debate. "I trust his word. Kearney is moving forward with plans to integrate our efforts to prepare. We feel that we're in strong position for federal funding and continue to work with Nebraska's Congressional delegation and the State of Nebraska so that we can build a home that honors the service of our veterans as quickly as possible."
