At least three crews, with ten engines, as well as three inspectors responded to a fire at Randolph Jewelry & Loan at 2700 Randolph Street.

Investigators says a candle burning on the second floor of the building was the cause. Everyone escaped in time, but LFR went unit by unit to make sure no one was still inside.

According to Lincoln Animal Control, two birds and a cat died in the blaze. One owner was able to get his dog out safely.

Red Cross is helping to relocated the families. There are five apartments above Randolph Jewelry and Loan.

Officials shut down 27th Street between J and A Streets for several hours while firefighters battled the flames.

1011 News was first on the scene as crews arrived. Officials say the fire was between the drop ceiling and roof on the second floor. This made it difficult to get under control.

LFR says crews will remain on the scene into the night, monitoring hot spots.

Investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire. They say most of the damage was contained to the second floor, but the store below suffered smoke and water damage.

The Lancaster County Assessor values the building at $336,000.
