Lincoln Fire and Rescue had a busy day Wednesday, responding to at least 110 calls.
According to LFR Captain Steve Dolezal, 60 is the daily norm, but the increase in calls was no surprise since it was the 4th of July. He says they do not staff more firefighters for the holiday.
Dolezal says fireworks were responsible for two of three fires Wednesday.
Dolezal believes floating lanterns may have caused small grass fires in the county.
Floating Lanterns, also known as Chinese Lanterns or Sky Lanterns are airborne paper lanterns. They are traditionally constructed from oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame, and contain a small candle or fuel cell composed of a waxy flammable material. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays lit, after which the lantern sinks back to the ground.
