With more people expected to be traveling on Nebraska roadways this Labor Day holiday, the Lincoln Police Department is coordinating saturation patrols to protect citizens from impaired driving.

Throughout Lincoln, extra officers will be conducting high visibility traffic enforcement and will take a zero tolerance approach to drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Officers will also be alert for other traffic and safety violations.

To coincide with the nationwide "You Drink & Drive. You Lose." campaign, this specialized enforcement is planned August 17, 2012 through September 3, 2012. Funding for the project is provided by the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.

"Our message is simple - You Drink & Drive. You Lose," said Chief Jim Peschong. "We encourage anyone planning on drinking alcohol to be responsible and designate a sober driver."

Last year, Lincoln police officers investigated 8,597 traffic accidents, 1,807 which resulted in injury and 10 accidents which resulted in death. Officers also arrested 1,906 drivers in 2011 for driving under the influence.
