Lance's Journal: Floating Boats at Holmes Lake, Sept. 12

Posted: Wed 7:19 PM, Sep 12, 2012

Because of expensive wooden boats, sailing in the early 20th Century was usually reserved for the elite.

But along came fiberglass in the 1960's and a brand new world was opened up for middle class sailors all across America.

It was quite apparent back in the 60's that Capital City sailors were just itching for a place to float their boats. Shortly after Holmes Lake Dam was built in 1968, the Holmes Lake Sailing Club was formed.

Now, more than 4 decades later, Lincoln area sailors continue to spend their summers tacking and jibing near 70th and Van Dorn.

Dave Brown says, "Sailing is a sport for life." And no one would no that better than Dave. He's been a sailor in Lincoln for the past 40 years, "Sailing is a sport for life because you can compete long after most other sports that you do in high school."

Every Thursday night from June to September, sailors partake in friendly competition.

Dave is thrilled to share his passion with newcomers, "We've had individuals come here and walk by and see the sign on the flagpole behind us that Holmes Park Sailing at 6pm every Thursday. They've stopped and we've thrown them on a boat and 3 weeks later they own one."

The Holmes Lake Sailing Club will wrap up their 2012 season September 13th. Races start at 6'o'clock.

The 2013 season gets underway in late May.
