Lance's Journal: Gerald Ford's 101st Birthday, July 14, 2014

Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha on July 14th, 1913. Ford is the only U.S. President ever to hail from the Cornhusker State.

Like most Nebraskans, I was aware that Gerald Ford was the only American President ever born in Nebraska..but, I was extremely surprised to find out that he actually only lived in Nebraska for 16 days.

Gerald Ford's Memorial Garden is located in midtown Omaha on the corner of 32nd & Woolworth.

Ford played football at Michigan, he earned a law degree from Yale, and he served in the U.S. Navy and represented Michigan in Congress for 25 years.

In 1974, Ford became the only person ever to become president without winning a general election for president or vice president.

Gerald Rudolph Ford became the leader of the free world after the Watergate scandal forced Richard Nixon to resign.

Ford visited Nebraska twice while president, his first stop was Lincoln in 1974 and he made a return trip to Omaha in 1975.

The original mansion that Ford was born in was destroyed by a fire in 1971, but a beautiful memorial is located on the same site as his birthplace.
