Law Firm Offers Free Rides to Decrease Drunk Driving

Drunk driving is on the rise, and the police are cracking down on drivers with the “You drink, You Drive, You Lose” campaign.

Now until January 2, one local law firm is trying to prevent drunks from getting behind the wheel.

“It's a public service designed to maximize driving safety among Lincoln drivers when people are engaged in revelry and merrymaking,” said Dan Friedman, of Friedman Law Offices.

More than twenty years ago, Friedman Law Offices started offering a free taxi service starting in early December. Freidman said that drunk driving is more prevalent during the holidays.

“I think it's just common knowledge that during the holidays people are off of work, college students aren't in school, there are parties-- [overall] more alcohol consumption going on than normal.”

To get a free ride, you must show a valid driver’s license, live within the city limits of Lincoln and call 474-safe. They will take you from any bar to your home, but not to another bar or party.

You must call 474-safe between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. If you call the cab company directly, the ride will not be free.

Friedman said his firm started the program to give back to the community.

“Our office is a law firm that is dedicated to protecting the rights of injury victims, and we've seen it time and time again due to the negligence of others.”

One bartender said he knows about the service, but his customers may not.

“More people should use it than they do,” said Alex Cihak, a bartender The Watering Hole downtown. "I don't know if they just don't know about it or if they're worried about leaving their cars here overnight, but it's not getting used as much as you would expect.”
