Update: Lincoln Police Arrest Shooting Suspects

Lincoln Police arrest two teens after a home invasion robbery at an apartment January 31st around 11:25 a.m. at 1848 Garfield Street.

Police developed 18-year-old Luis Diaz and a 17-year-old as suspects. Officers arrested them during traffic stops Sunday.

Police say the two men kicked in the door to an apartment and demanded money from the people inside. They say Diaz was armed a baseball bat and the 17-year-old with a handgun.

When the victims refused to pay, police say one of the 17-year-old shot the victim in the midsection.

One of the home invasion victims, who wished to remain anonymous, told 1011 News Thursday night that at first she "thought it was a joke."

Police say the suspects then ran westbound from the apartment build and got into a waiting car.

The mother of a women in the apartment tells 10/11 that her two young grandchildren, ages two and five, were in the apartment when two men kicked in their door and demanded money. The woman says her daughter recognized one of the men.

Five schools were put into put on lock down as a precaution. Prescott, McPhee, Saratoga and Everett elementary schools and Park Middle were locked down from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.

LPS Director of Safety Bill Kuehn says it's better to be safe than sorry. He says doors were locked and no one was allowed in or out of the buildings. The lock down did not effect students school work.

Police say the shooting is not random. They believe the suspects and the victims know each other. They say it is too early to know if the shooting is drug or gang related.

Diaz is facing attempted robbery and aiding and abetting 1st degree assault charges. The 17-year-old was taken to the juvenile detention center for attempt robbery, use of a weapon to commit a felony and 1st degree assault.
