Lincoln Senator Proposes Raise for Governor & Elected Officials

Nebraska lawmakers are considering raising the salaries for the governor and other constitutional officers by 20 percent in 2015.

Sen. Bill Avery told the Government, Military and Veteran Affairs Committee on Wednesday that salaries for offices like the governor, attorney general and secretary of state need to increase so the state can recruit the best candidates. He says constitutional officers' salaries should be closer to the national average.

Constitutional officers cannot by law receive pay increases during one term. Under the bill, the next governor would earn $126,000, which is still below the about $130,000 national average pay for a governor.

Avery says he suspects this bill will be a tough sell, considering Nebraska voters' opposition to a proposed pay raise for lawmakers last year.
