Feeling the burn after budget cuts, the Lincoln Southwest Forensics Team wanted to come up with a creative way to raise money. They mixed brain and brawn in the 2013 "Express Yourself" Triathlon.
Students said they wanted a fun way to raise money and mix the worlds of athletics and academics for the community. Triathletes competed in the event with a 30 minute stationary bike ride,10 minute swim, and 20 minute run.
The speech team lost $5,000 in funding this year, and students said the adjustment hasn't been easy.
That meant less tournaments and coaches were cracking down on who could go, we had to increase how much the individual student payed, and so it really came down to hard decisions," said Forensics Team Senior, Erin Lukin. "We decided this was a good fundraiser because we thought it could bring in some money, involve the communtiy, and get the word out there that we wanna help and wanna be involved."
