Lincoln police are investigating a shooting death, they say appears accidental.

Police have identified the 20-year-old victim as Emanuel Zavaleta Hernandez.

Captain Michon Morrow says it happened just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police were called to 4636 Baldwin Ave. on a report that a man had shot himself in the head.

Police believe Hernandez was handling a gun under the assumption it was unloaded when the gun went off.

Police are not saying how many people were in the apartment, but say the people there were involved in a disturbance less than a block away.

Morrow says some of the same people were involved in an assault of an officer earlier Tuesday morning. Police responded to a call near 46th and Huntington just after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say a group of people were arguing when officers arrived. They say one man ran off and another tried to stop police from chasing him.

They got into a scuffle. Police took that man to jail for assaulting an officer.

The officer had minor injuries.

Police say the apartment where Hernandez died belongs to a female friend of his.

The investigation is ongoing.
