York County Sheriff's office investigates the death of a Lincoln police officer.
Officer Anthony Howe died last night on Interstate-80 during a rollover crash.
Sheriff Dale Radcliff said Howe chose to live in York and commute to Lincoln for work because he enjoyed the drive.
But last night, that commute took his life.
He was an officer, father, husband and coach, and a man described as reliable and hardworking.
“He was very pleasant to be with,” Radcliff said. “I had no complaints. I had no complaints from the public and that's kind of unusual when you're an officer.”
Now police search for answers surrounding the car accident that took his life.
“Basically, we're trying to figure out why, why all of a sudden he would drive off that way,” Radcliff said. “The witness that he just passed indicated that there was no erratic driving, speeding or anything. He just kind of indicated it looked like he just drove off into the median, ever so gently.”
What they do know is that it all happened around eight last night.
Officer Howe was driving to work on Interstate-80. His wheels went off the road. He lost control, struck a median and the car rolled, ejecting Howe.
Police say he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
They continue to investigate, while mourning their co-worker and friend.
“Tony was somebody you could wind up giving any kind of case to and you never got any complaints from him,” Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong said. “He's a hard worker, very steady and very reliable, and loved his work and came to work and did his job everyday.
Howe served as a member of LPD’s Field Force and Honor Guard.
Just last May he joined the guard in honoring fallen officers.
“There's a lot of unanswered questions,” Peschong said. “What really did happen? Why did this happen? Why did it happen to Tony? There’s a lot of unanswered questions that we'll never really know.”
Howe was an eight year veteran of the Lincoln Police Department. Before coming to Lincoln, he spent six years with the York County Sheriff’s Department.
Howe is survived by his wife and three children.
