Entertaining guests inside of their Haymarket location, the staff of Ten Thousand Villages kicked off International Women's Day on Saturday with music, arts and also providing a message for women here in Lincoln about the struggle for equality world wide.
"Our goal is to educate people about the opportunity that fair trade allows women to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of their families," said Lisa Lux, assistant manager of Ten Thousand Villages.
While massive progress has been made to improve the rights of women, Lux knows that they are still being mistreated in many countries.
"In a lot of places around the world opportunities are fairly limited for women and they're often times the most marginalized part of the population," said Lux.
While bringing awareness is key, enjoying the talents of female artists is also an important part of International Women's Day.
"Celebrate the traditional work that women are doing around the world and in our community as well," said Lux.
