Local Homeowners Haunt For Charity

When you think Halloween, you may think candy, costumes, and creepy creatures. But do you think charity? One local family is combining all of those this year.

Bob and Jan Schoonover said they have spooked out their house for five years, and had a spooky forest for five years before that. But this year it isn't just tricks and treats.

When a neighbor asked if they take donations, the Schoonovers said no, but it gave them the idea.
They decided that this year they will use their popular haunted yard as a way to help out a local organization.

"If they would like to make a donation to the food bank that would help. We're just trying to do something nice for the community. Give something back," said Bob Schoonover.

They said they hope to continue giving to other organizations, even opening a haunted forest attraction in the coming years. It's really all about the fun.

"My favorite part is Halloween night when we get everything turned on, the foggers and strobe lights and all that, dressing up and actually getting to scare kids," he said.

Even though Bob loves scaring, it's only big kids who get the big scare. The Schoonovers start building their haunted attraction on October first each year and build it throughout the month.

If you want more information about the haunting display, you can join their mailing list by emailing schoonover@windstream.net or texting 402-202-1604. They also invite anybody who's interested to visit their house at 1208 W. Lake-and donate!
