PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) -- A bank robbery suspect who shot himself in the head Saturday afternoon after failing to elude authorities died Sunday morning at Alegent Creighton Medical Center.
Police from Papillion, La Vista and Bellevue, Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department deputies and Nebraska State Patrol troopers with the NSP helicopter above chased 33-year-old Eric Dickerson of Papillion for about 30 minutes before apprehending him.
Authorities say Dickerson shot himself in a cornfield between Papillion and Bellevue. He was suspected of robbing the First National Bank branch at Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion around 12:30 p.m.
A grand jury will review the death because Dickerson was being chased by officers when he shot himself with a .22-caliber rifle.
“I've never seen anything like this in real life,” said Jason Hennings, who lives in the neighborhood where the pursuit ended. “That many cop cars and how they were surrounding the whole field. It was really interesting and just watching the helicopter circling around. I've never seen anything like that before.”
