The state tax on every gallon of fuel sold in the state will decrease again in January.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue says the tax will decline to 24.6 cents per gallon on Jan. 1 from the current 26.2 cents.

The fuel tax generates money to fund highway projects and maintenance. Each cent of motor fuels tax generates about $12 million in revenue annually for the state.

The new fuel tax rate will be in effect from January to July 2013 when it will be reset.
