A 28-year-old man has been given jail and probation for abandoning three dogs at a home in Hamilton County.

Eric Derr, of Giltner, was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 days in jail and six months of probation during which he can't own any animals.

He also was given 30 days of jail in July unless that time is waived by a judge.

Derr had pleaded no contest and was convicted of misdemeanor animal abandonment or neglect.

Officials say one young pit bull was only hours from death when it was found with two other dogs on Dec. 20.

Another dog was also emaciated but not as badly. An older dog they were found with was euthanized because of its condition and disposition.
