Several conservative Nebraska lawmakers are initiating a new gun debate in the Legislature with a series of measures modeled after proposals in other states.
Lawmakers will present the bills Wednesday to the Legislature's Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Bill Kintner of Papillion has introduced a bill that would prohibit the state from disclosing gun-permit information. He filed the measure in response to a New York newspaper that published an interactive map of all gun permits in a two-county area. Kintner pointed to a similar measure in Maine, which passed last month with unusual bipartisan support.
Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont has introduced a bill that would attempt to prevent the federal government from banning semi-automatic firearms, except for those already banned in Nebraska. Janssen is a Republican candidate for governor.
