Several farm groups and students who live on farms say Nebraska schools need to debunk agriculture stereotypes in the classroom.
Lawmakers on Tuesday heard testimony on a bill that would create
an Agriculture Literacy Task Force.
The panel would study whether schools in the state are effectively teaching children about agriculture and how food gets to their plates.
Supporters of the task force say students need to be learning that not all eggs are white and not all farmers wear overalls and straw hats.
Senator Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids introduced the measure to
examine what students are learning because more children are
growing up with no connection to farming and ranching.
State Department of Education officials oppose the bill because they say they are already studying the issue.
