Omaha Senator Lathrop 'Interested' in Governor's Seat

A Nebraska state lawmaker who was considered a prospect for the U.S. Senate has ruled himself out, but says he is interested in running for governor.

Sen. Steve Lathrop told The Associated Press Monday that he is
considering a campaign for governor in 2014. The Omaha Democrat
says he has not yet decided for sure, and won't in the near future.

Lathrop says he opted not to seek the U.S. Senate seat held by
Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson, who announced last year that he won't
run for re-election.

Lathrop, an attorney, says he wants to continue working in the
Legislature on child welfare reforms, fair and sustainable tax
relief, and other issues.

Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, a Republican, has already
declared that he will run for governor in 2014.
