Many people know the value of getting your furnace checked every year, or going to the dentist for a cleaning, but some people forget about an eye exam.

With the year quickly coming to an end, the Nebraska Optometric Association is urging you to schedule an annual eye exam before January 1 in order to take advantage of flexible spending accounts and insurance deductibles.

Top notch vision is a concern for Steve Dady, who recently picked up his new glasses in Grand Island.

"I'm looking to have a nice clear vision of whats happening with my eyes in general," said Customer Steve Dady.

Staying on top of his vision is a way of life. His doctor at Grand Island's Family Eye Care Center says it should be for you too.

Dr. Chad Hudnall says now is the time to schedule an exam before the end of the year.

"We are urging people to do that because it's a win win. You take care of yourself and your eyes and utilize any benefits that you do have," said Dr. Chad Hudnall.

If you have a flexible spending account, most employers require funds to be used by December 31.

If you or a member of your family has already met your insurance deductible, experts say it's a good idea to schedule your medical visits, including annual eye exams, before January 1.

Doctors say don't forget about your kids, especially if you notice problems in school.

"Kids will come back the next year their parents will say we had no idea when they got their glasses it really changed their performance in school," said Hudnall.

It's a lesson Dady says he learned when he was a kid.

"I always had to have glasses and when I got into the service, the same thing there, I had to have real nice glasses to see," said Dady.
