An Oregon man is in custody after leading the Nebraska State Patrol on a short chase just before 2:00 Monday afternoon.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 66-year-old Walter Schmidt of Salem, Oregon was driving a 1995 Explorer that was reported stolen from Salem, Oregon.

Troopers say they found the Explorer in a ditch on Highway 34 near Kawasaki in Lincoln, Neb.

While the trooper was checking Schmidt's information, he took off westbound on Highway 34, beginning the chase.

The chase continued on Northwest 27th Street to Alvo Road where Schmidt then left the road, driving through a field.

Troopers say K-9 units and air patrol were used to help find Schmidt.

The Explorer was found abandoned near 3800 McKelvie Road.

Schmidt was taken into custody after being found walking in a creek bed.

Schmidt is lodged on charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Flight of Arrest, and Willful Reckless Driving.
