Osborn Declares Bid for Senate Seat

Former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn is now a candidate for U.S. Senate.

Osborn's campaign manager, Dave Boomer, says Osborn filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission in recent days in a bid to replace GOP Sen. Mike Johanns, who is not seeking re-election in 2014.

Osborn was the first Republican hopeful to announce he would likely be a candidate for the 2014 GOP primary after Gov. Dave Heineman bowed out of a run on May 25.

Osborn, who was raised in Norfolk, became a national celebrity in 2001 when a Navy surveillance plane he was piloting over the South China Sea collided with a Chinese fighter plane. He successfully landed his crippled plane on a Chinese island. He and his crew spent 11 days in captivity before being released.
