The Speakeasy Restaurant can be found in the tiny little town of Sacramento, located on the outskirts of Our Town Holdrege. It opened for business in 1974.
Six years later, T.P. Puls and his wife Theresa took ownership and built The Speakeasy into a fine dining destination in south central Nebraska.
T.P. And Theresa bought it even though it had holes in the walls, "Snow would come through the wall on the north side of the building. And our locals, we were packed, we'd be packed on Saturday night and they didn't care, they loved it here."
T.P. says that love affair with The Speakeasy would continue to grow throughout the years, "It was a family place, it was a country club for this small country area. And we never left a Saturday night before 1 o'clock."
After nearly four decades of late nights, T.P. And Theresa decided to retire about a year ago. That's when their son Ryan decided to take over. After spending 18 years in Seattle, Ryan moved his family back to Phelps County to take over the family business, "It feels good, I love it with my daughter, she's 8 years old, gonna turn 9 in February, I wanted her to have the childhood that I had where you can get on your bike and just go."
From Omaha to Denver, customers travel great distances to get a Speakeasy steak. But Ryan says there is a variety of meals coming out of his kitchen Ryan likes to mix up the menu from time to time.
Every couple of months, he hosts a gourmet night that seats about 50 people and includes a 5 to 6 course meal.
