Two People Killed After Collisions with Semi-Trucks

The Nebraska State Patrol says a man was killed in a crash in I-80 Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a semi was stopped on I-80 near Maxwell in Lincoln County because of another accident blocking lanes.

NSP said just before 1 p.m. a car collided with the parked semi. A passenger in the car, 63-year-old Michael Hughes of New Hope, Minnesota, died.

The driver of the semi, 39-yrear-old Ted Faatz of Council Bluffs was not injured.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, a Grand Island man was also killed in a collision with a semi Wednesday.

At 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, a two-vehicle injury accident just west of the intersection of Highway 34 and Blaine Street was reported to the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said 34-year-old Hussein Ahmed of Grand Island slid off Highway 34, over-corrected into the opposite lane and collided with a semi driven by 67-year-old Rick Ruggles of McCook.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Ahmed was transported to St. Francis Medical Center by Grand Island ambulance where he was pronounced dead. Ruggles was not injured.

Road conditions caused by the winter storm were significant causes of this crash.
