Report: Same Weapon Used in Two Murders in Mississippi

By  |

New information in the murder of a 74-year-old Raymond man.

Police say Tom Schlender was shot and killed on Interstate 55 in northern Mississippi on Tuesday May 8th.

Family says he was driving his car to Pensacola, Florida to pick up his grandchild.

Three days later, a 48-year-old woman was found near her car on Mississippi Highway 713 in Tunica County.

DeSoto County district attorney John Champion said the shootings are related but there's no evidence to suggest that the victims knew each other. Both victims had been on the side of the road when they were murdered.

Now a Memphis TV station is reporting that the same gun was used in both murders. However, authorities have yet to confirm that report.

Police are keeping many details to themselves of the two deadly shootings. But authorities believe they could be at the hands of someone posing as law enforcement who is pulling people over.

Schlender will be buried in Lincoln, Thursday.

"He was a good dad, a great grandfather," said Tracy Anderson, one of Schlender's three daughters. Schlender was also married for 50 years and had many grandchildren.
