Red Kettle Campaign Begins

By  |

Starting Friday, you'll see bell ringers next to red kettles, collection donations around Lincoln.

To begin, there are 20 red kettles near restaurants and stores all over town. Starting the day after Thanksgiving, there will 35 red kettles.

The Salvation Army hopes to collect $551,000 this year. They set a record last year with donations and hope for even more in 2012. They say need is growing and so they need help.

Volunteers are stationed at each red kettle. They can work a minimum of two hours at a time. More volunteers are desperately needed for the season ahead.

"Literally, we need thousands of people and volunteers. The more volunteers we can get, if you can only give two hours. Maybe you say 'I don't really have the money to put in the kettle, but I can give time and you can put that time in the kettles," said Captain Jamie Pennington of the Salvation Army.

Volunteers will ring bells through Christmas Eve.
