Red Dress Dash Raises Awareness for Heart Disease

It's not something you see very often, men running down the street wearing a dress.

But Thursday night they did, and it was all for the "Red Dress Dash" to raise awareness for heart disease.

Fifty to 75 people took part in the first event to ever come to Lincoln.

It was a red sea of runners and walkers. Some wore hats, others had on a festive boa.

Dr. Denes Korpas is a Cardiologist who took part in "Red Dress Dash". He explains his choice of dress and feather boa, "I think I picked the right one, it's fitting OK. It did not hamper me running, so I think this is going to work for me next year."

Beckie Rech and Samantha Pelster were decked to the nines in their homemade costume. They say, "We love the American Heart Association so anything with glitter and pouf and sparkle. It's a good cause worth the extra effort."

It's a fun way to spread a serious message. Heart disease is the number one killer of women.

Dr. Korpas says, "I think we're lagging behind in women. You know if you go to the emergency room, you're more likely to be sent back home, and your symptom is not taken seriously. I think that contributes to a higher mortality, a higher death rate for women."

The point six mile race ended at the State Capitol, which was lit up red. There Governor Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganem joined all the dashers. The governor even donned his own red accessory, a red feather boa.

He told people, "I hereby proclaim the third day of February 2012 as national "Wear Red Day" and we are really proud of you, Congratulations."

Gov. Heineman added, "I want everyone to recognize that if you have any symptoms you need to see your doctor, go to the hospital. The other thing I learned from the Chief Medical Officer, eat properly, exercise as healthy as you can, all those things make a difference."

The American Heart Association Sweethearts were also there for the event. The program is a group of high school girls who take promote being heart healthy and the dangers of heart disease, while giving back to the community.

We're wearing red here at 10/11 this week. Along with Governor Heineman and the American Heart Association hope you'll wear red on Friday, February 3rd too!
