A quiet Saturday evening in Fullerton turns violent, leaving one man under arrest. What began as a fight between roommates gets out of hand, quickly escalating into a police standoff.
A 911 call of an armed disturbance brought Nance County Sheriff's deputies to the scene at Fourth and Broadway Streets around 6:30 p.m.
"I was sitting in my house with my daughter, my mom and a friend, and we heard a loud noise which we discovered later was possibly a gun shot," says Melissa Zimmer, who lives a few doors down.
Deputies say two roommates, both men in their late 40s or early 50s, got into a fight inside their shared home.
"First responding units, when they got here, found out there had been some kind of disturbance, there had been an altercation and shots had been fired," says Nance County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Monroe.
Local authorities called in back-up, bringing in the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team and a Merrick County Sheriff's deputy. Dozens of residents lined the streets, watching the standoff unfold. It's something they say doesn't happen often in their little city.
"A whole bunch of people showed up to watch because it's kind of a big deal in a small town," says Zimmer.
Officers arrested Jonathan Dale Wondercheck, whom they say had been drinking. Wondercheck is currently held at the Platte County Detention Facility. No one was injured in the incident.
"It was kind of scary not knowing what was going on, it's so close, and you know, we heard there was a gun involved," says Zimmer. "I'm just glad for the cops we have, and the safety of them protecting us."
The Nance County Sheriff's office says the Nance County Attorney has been contacted, and charges against Wondercheck are expected to be filed on Monday.
