Victorine Lieske turned an injury into an opportunity. After injuring her back, she spent a week in bed.
"I was stuck there with absolutely nothing to do for an entire week," said Lieske. "I decided I would go ahead and write that novel I always wanted to write."
A busy mother of four, Victorine completed her first draft in just one week. She posted her book online for other writers to critique.
"I found out that what I had done wasn't all that great," said Lieske. "I had probably done some classic newbie mistakes. It's very hard to take criticism, especially when you first start out. You have to really learn to grow a thick skin and take a step back from it."
That was four years ago. Victorine self-published her novel, Not What She Seems, on Amazon's Kindle last April.
"It's really quite easy," said Lieske. "I found out that you can make your book available on Kindle you don't have to pay anything."
On average Victorine's book sells 800 copies a day, most in electronic format.
"I priced it at 99 cents," said Lieske. "I only make 35 cents on every copy that sells, and you wouldn't think that that would be any money at all, but when you are selling thousands each month that actually brings in quite a bit on income."
Victorine says she's already made more than $25,000. She's now working on her next book.
"It's an amazing feeling to know that you've created something that other people are reading and enjoying," said Lieske.
And she's giving them a taste of Nebraska. Victorine says she modeled parts her book off the town of Seward.
