The families of 12 Nebraska soldiers said goodbye Tuesday.
Their loved ones will be spending a year in Afghanistan, but their mission is not combat.
Agriculture Development Team 4 will be working with Afghan farmers.
They'll be teaching them more effective ways to plant, irrigate and manage the crops.
The soldiers will also be helping to develop better markets in the region.
The farmers in Afghanistan currently use out-dated farming techniques and members of the team say passing on modern methods can help the entire region to become more productive and stable.
It's all part of the mission to prepare Afghanistan for the American military's departure in 2014.
The team will be gone for one year on their mission.
