State Fair Driving and Parking Advice from Police

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- With nice weather Saturday lasting through the day, the State Fair saw a lot of business, meaning less available parking.

Grand Island Police had to close the front entrance to Fonner Park Saturday because the parking lots filled up.

This caused a few backups along South Locust St.

GIPD recommends following the signs that are all around directing you. They also ask you not to stop to talk to officers.

There are a couple other options for parking other than the main lots.

"They have lots to the East of the fairgrounds, there's what they call Lot 8 which is just East of the horse track," said Sgt. Stanley Steele. "It's a smaller lot so it fills up pretty fast but then what we call the Luebbe Lot. Fonner and Stuhr Road is the entrance to that lot, it's just a very large field, I don't know how many it can accommodate but we've never filled it."

Sgt. Steele said GIPD updates parking and traffic conditions of the State Fair on their Twitter account, @GIPoliceDept.
