Otoe County authorities took a 24-year-old man into custody Saturday for allegedly slashing his mother's scalp with a hunting-type knife.
Mike Holland, chief Otoe County deputy, says Dakota Beadle is believed to be a transient that has recently lived in Douglas County, but came to his mother's house near 900 North 50 road a couple of days ago.
He said the woman turned up around 6 a.m. at St. Mary's Community Hospital with wounds so severe the hospital called law enforcement.
"Deputies responded to the hospital to find the victim with a fairly gruesome, lengthy incision wound to her head. Basically, the wound went from ear to ear above the top of her scalp," said Holland.
Holland said there had been an argument prior to the assault.
Deputies and Nebraska City police executed a search warrant at the residence, taking Beadle into custody.
Also arrested at the residence was 25-year-old Abigail E. Rowell, who was wanted on an outstanding Douglas County warrant.
