Three people are in the hospital following a head on crash near Plattsmouth.
Emergency crews responded to the report of a crash just south of Plattsmouth on Highway 75, about 9 p.m. Saturday.
According to Cass County Sheriff William C Brueggemann, deputies found two vehicles had collided on the yellow center line of Highway 75, north of Wiles Road.
One vehicle was driven by 23-year-old Tyler Westerfield of Johnson. The other was driven by 21-year-old Natasha Rice, of Omaha.. There was a passenger in Rice's vehicle, 22-year-old Samantha Rowell, of Bellevue.
Sheriff Brueggemann said Westerfield was traveling northbound on Highway 75 in the southbound lane. Rice was southbound on Highway 75 and when she saw that Westerfield was in her lane, she swerved to her left into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane.
According to reports, that's when Westerfield became aware he was in the wrong lane and swerved to his right to re-enter his proper lane. Officials say Rice tried to swerve back to her right and both vehicles collided head-on, at the yellow centerline of the highway.
The jaws of life were used to free Westerfield from his vehicle by Plattsmouth and Murray Fire & Rescue. Two Lifenet Helicopters also responded.
Westerfield and Rice were transported by Lifenet Helicopter to Creighton Hospital. Rowell was also transported to the hospital by Plattsmouth Rescue.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor of the accident. An accident re-constructionist is investigating.
