The hospitals in Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney all had their first babies of the year on the first day of the year.

Sophia Diane Lemburg led the way at Mary Lanning Health Care in Hastings just a few hours after midnight.

With an early January due date, her parents say they weren't sure if Sophia would have 2013 or 2014 on her birth certificate.

"She came when she wanted to come, we weren't supposed to have her until January 7th and she decided she wanted to come on the 1st," says dad Alan.

Sophia is the first baby for Alan and wife Kayla. She'll be one of about 750 born at Mary Lanning this year.

Officials at Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island say Awil Muse and Nimo Ahmed welcomed their daughter Salado into the world around 8:30 a.m. on New Years Day.

Good Samaritan officials say the first birth in Kearney came Wednesday afternoon. Hannah and Jeremy Nelson of Gibbon had their daughter Amelia around 4:30 p.m.
