Sarpy County in eastern Nebraska will be the site of a new national veterans' cemetery.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Thursday its acquisition of 236 acres between Gretna and Papillion south of Omaha for the cemetery.
The announcement comes months after U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson said the department planned to approve the Sarpy County National Veterans Cemetery.
Nelson, a Democrat who is retiring from the U.S. Senate in two weeks, worked closely with the Sarpy County Board and the Omaha City Council and drafted legislation in 2009 to secure federal support for the cemetery.
