VA Secretary Resigns In Midst Of Scandal

WASHINGTON, D.C. President Obama announced Friday morning that VA Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson will take over as Secretary of Veterans Affairs after Eric Shinseki submitted his resignation to the President in the face of a growing scandal over veterans' benefits.

Earlier this week, a report released by a watchdog group stated about 1,700 veterans in need of care were "at risk of being lost or forgotten" after being kept off the official waiting list at the Phoenix VA hospital.

That was the latest in a string of problems discovered within the Veterans Affairs department.

Last week, it was announced that 26 VA facilities were being investigated nationwide, including the Phoenix hospital, which faces allegations that 40 people died while waiting for treatment.

Shinseki apologized for the delays in treatment and announced steps in fixing certain problems, including removing the senior leaders from the Phoenix VA medical center and cancelling bonuses for some health executives.
